Always wanted to learn to sew but have no idea where to start or even how to use a machine? Or perhaps you used to sew and would love to revisit this amazing craft again but have lost confidence and need a refresher? Well this is the course for you! Allowing a ‘back to basics’ approach by making friends with a sewing machine, through to making simple projects. This course will teach you a variety of skills and techniques that will help you tackle future projects with more confidence and ability.

This four week all inclusive course is a perfect way to learn and build your sewing skills, whilst making four different projects. Perfect for gifting to loved ones or to keep all to yourself!

Session details:

Session 1 - this session is to familiarise yourself with a sewing machine and getting to grips   with exercises set that will build your confidence with the machine. You will then make beautiful bunting for a party or to decorate a room.

Session 2 - make a lovely buttoned envelope cushion for your home

Session 3 - make a small zip pouch that could be used as a pencil case, make-up case or for general storage of tools and equipment for your hobby. 

Session 4 - make a practical tote bag. 

Skills and techniques you will learn:

  • how to set up the sewing machine and wind the bobbin

  • how to change stitches, length and feet

  • how to use a pattern and cut out fabric on the straight grain 

  • how to sew simple seams and finish off the seam allowances

  • how to snip corners and press out seams

  • how to attach bias binding

  • how to hem projects

  • how to make button holes

  • how to insert a zip

  • how to add 3 dimensional shaping to simple projects

  • how to top stitch

Skill level:

None required, this is for complete beginners or those wishing to refresh their skills and confidence with sewing.

What's included

  • All fabrics, thread and notions for each of the 4 projects - a choice will be provided subject to availability.

  • Pattern and construction instructions for each project to take home with you to practice and make more!

  • A good supply of basic sewing equipment and sundry materials, including use of our Janome Sewist 725S sewing machines. You can always bring your own machine and equipment if you wish.

  • Tea/coffee and biscuits or cake.  Please advise if there are any food allergies or intolerances.  We will do our best to cater for you.

Please note that classes will commence on time but may run slightly over if necessary to 10.30pm latest.
