Our comprehensive eight week course is perfect for those wanting to make their own clothes and learn the process of dressmaking to enable you to progress with confidence to more advanced dressmaking projects, to work through and make up a pattern and learn the basis of obtaining good fit to your unique body shape.

This course is ideal for those new to dressmaking or those that have lost their confidence in the dressmaking process and looking for a more comprehensive approach.  Students should be proficient with a sewing machine or have completed our Introduction To Sewing Workshop.

Session details:

During the eight 3 hour sessions, you will be taught how to make three wardrobe staples; a semi-fitted pull over top, a choice of one of three skirt variations and a choice of one of three lined dress variations. 

Skills and techniques you will learn:

  • how to accurately take measurements in order to choose the right size pattern to cut

  • how to make a toile of each pattern

  • how to make simple fit and length adjustments to improve fit to your unique body shape

  • how to transfer adjustments to the pattern

  • how to place the pattern on the fabric

  • how to transfer markings from the paper pattern to the fabric

  • how to prepare the fabric for sewing

  • how to finish seams

  • how to sew darts

  • how to sew facings with an under/topstitch

  • how to insert a zip/invisible zip

  • how to add external pockets (optional depending on pattern chosen)

  • how to sew pleats (depending on pattern chosen)

  • how to attach facings and waistbands

  • how to incorporate lining

  • how to insert sleeves

  • you will also learn a range of professional garment construction methods and finishing techniques.

What's included:

  • Three sewing patterns are included (one top, one skirt of your choice and one dress of your choice).

  • Muslin and thread to make a toile of each of your garments.

  • All equipment and sundry materials

  • Tea/coffee and biscuits or cake.  Please advise if there are any food allergies or intolerances.  We will do our best to cater for you.

You will need to bring:

Your own fabric for each of the garments and thread along with any other notions the pattern requires to complete the garment applicable.  Full details below. 


There maybe homework required in between sessions, such as cutting paper patterns and catching up on sewing.  If you do not own a sewing machine, you may be able to hire one of ours, please contact us for more details.

First Project: Simple Top (McCalls M7322)

Fabric 45”/115cm wide:-
Size 4-14 = 1.8m
Size 16-26 = 2.3m
Fabric 60”/ 150cm wide:-
Sizes 4-10 = 1.4m
Sizes 12-26 = 1.5m

Thread

Fusible interfacing = 0.8m

Recommended fabrics: medium weight cottons, cotton blends, lawn, poplin, linen, linen blends


Second Project - Three Skirt Options:

1. Pencil Skirt (McCalls M3830 - fabric requirements below are for a mid-length skirt, if longer more fabric will be required)

Fabric 45”/115cm wide:-
Size 6-10 = 1.1m
Size 12-20 = 1.6m
Size 22 = 1.7m
Fabric 60”/ 150cm wide:-
Sizes 6-22 = 1m

7inch zipper, thread, one hook & eye

interfacing = 0.6m

Recommended fabrics: Cotton and cotton blends, needlecord, chambray, denim, twill, linen, linen blends, light weight wool, wool crepe, gabardine, wool blends

2. A Line Skirt (Burda Style 6682 - fabric requirement below are for knee length skirt)

Fabric 45”/115cm wide:-
Size 10-16 = 1.7m 
Size 18-24 = 1.9m 
Fabric 60”/ 150cm wide:-
Size 10-22 = 1.3m

Size 24 = 1.5m 

Thread, 9inch zipper & 2 x buttons for the front pocket version

3. Pleated Skirt (Simplicity 1109)
